Perplexity has introduced its first AI-driven web browser, titled Comet, in a bid to compete with Google Search as the go-to platform for information retrieval online. Initially, the browser is available to subscribers of Perplexity’s $200-per-month Max plan and a select group of waitlist invitees.
Comet’s standout feature is its integration of Perplexity’s AI search engine, which is set as the default option, showcasing the company’s principal service of generating AI-assisted summaries of search results. Additionally, Comet includes the Comet Assistant, a new AI agent designed to automate various routine tasks such as summarizing emails, managing tabs, and navigating websites on behalf of users. The assistant operates through a sidecar interface, allowing it to analyze web pages and respond to user inquiries in real-time.
Perplexity has recently unveiled a series of initiatives, but the launch of Comet is perceived as particularly pivotal in the company’s efforts to vie against Google. The CEO, Aravind Srinivas, emphasizes the potential of Comet to serve as a comprehensive operating system for users, facilitating an “infinite retention” model by becoming the default browser of choice.
Entering a competitive landscape dominated by Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari, Comet faces significant challenges. However, with growing user engagement — as indicated by 780 million searches logged in May 2025 and a monthly growth rate surpassing 20% — there’s hope that Perplexity’s new launch could resonate with its existing user base and attract new ones.
In contrast to traditional browsers, Comet seeks to pave new paths in user experience. Despite the innovative features, initial testing revealed that while the Comet Assistant can assist with simple tasks effectively, it struggles with more complex requests, leading to occasional inaccuracies. Users must also grant extensive permissions for the assistant to operate fully, raising concerns about data privacy.
Nevertheless, the promise of streamlined workflows and integrated AI assistance presents a hopeful future for Comet, indicating Perplexity’s commitment to evolving the browsing experience. Comet’s combination of advanced AI functions paired with robust user engagement could provide a solid foundation for the startup as it aims to carve out a significant place in the digital landscape.
