A pediatrician from Oklahoma, Dr. Neha Gupta, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the suspicious death of her 4-year-old daughter, Aria Talathi, which occurred in a rental home in El Portal, Florida, on June 27. Miami-Dade detectives have initiated an investigation that reveals troubling signs of foul play, including evidence of “asphyxiation by smothering.”
The incident was reported at approximately 3:41 a.m. on June 27 when first responders were alerted to a child found unresponsive in a swimming pool. Upon arrival, officers found Aria submerged in the pool, and despite attempts to perform CPR, she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Initially, Gupta claimed that the drowning was accidental. She stated that she and Aria had returned from a day out and went to bed around midnight. Gupta asserted that she woke up around 3:20 a.m. to an unidentified sound and then discovered her daughter missing from the bed and found her in the pool. However, as detectives investigated further, inconsistencies emerged in her statements.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s autopsy concluded that Aria’s lungs and stomach did not contain water, thereby ruling out drowning. It was noted that the child had injuries, including cuts in her mouth and bruising, which did not align with Gupta’s claims of performing CPR. These findings led investigators to suggest that Aria was likely dead before being placed in the pool and pointed to signs of smothering.
Additionally, it was revealed that Gupta shared custody of Aria with her ex-husband, Dr. Saurabh Talathi, with whom she had an ongoing custody dispute. Talathi stated he was unaware that Gupta had taken Aria to Florida.
After gathering sufficient evidence—including surveillance video and autopsy results—detectives obtained an arrest warrant. Gupta was apprehended in Oklahoma City with the assistance of local authorities and is awaiting extradition to Florida.
Gupta’s attorney has expressed disappointment with the decision to charge her, asserting that she is a grieving mother who should not be in jail. Meanwhile, her employment at OU Health and the University of Oklahoma has been terminated following her arrest.
