Pearl Jam’s drummer Matt Cameron has announced his departure from the band after an impressive nearly 30-year tenure. In a heartfelt message shared on the band’s social media accounts, Cameron expressed his gratitude to band members Jeff Ament, Ed Vedder, Mike McCready, and Stone Gossard for welcoming him into the group in 1998. He reflected on his time with the band, filled with friendships and artistic achievements, stating, “I am forever grateful to the crew, staff, and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey.”
Cameron joined Pearl Jam at a time when the band was already making waves in the music scene, having emerged from Seattle in 1990 alongside the grunge movement. Prior to this, Cameron was known for his role in Soundgarden, having played with them for more than a decade before rejoining in 2010 after a break. His addition to Pearl Jam made him the group’s longest-serving drummer, marking a significant period of stability and creativity.
Since Cameron’s arrival, he has participated in every studio album and live performance, becoming a vital part of the band’s identity. Notably, he and Pearl Jam’s original drummer Dave Krusen were inducted together into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognizing their contributions to the band’s legacy. Cameron had just completed a tour supporting Pearl Jam’s latest album, “Dark Matter,” and he is set to be honored again with Soundgarden’s induction into the same Hall of Fame later this year.
The band members praised Cameron for his immense talent and crucial role in propelling their live shows and studio recordings over the years. They acknowledged him not only as a drummer but as a friend and a crucial part of their musical journey.
Cameron’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for Pearl Jam, but fans remain hopeful for what the future holds for both him and the band as they continue to celebrate their storied careers.
