Pazmandi Powers Lindenwood Women’s Hockey to Shootout Win Over Bemidji State

In an exciting conclusion to their match against the Bemidji State Beavers, Lindenwood Women’s Hockey triumphed in a shootout, showcasing the exceptional skills of Zsofia Pazmandi. The thrilling encounter unfolded in Maryland Heights, Missouri, where the Lions battled fiercely on Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers were quick to gain the upper hand, scoring less than two minutes into the first period. However, as the first period was nearing its end, Pazmandi equalized for the Lions with just under two minutes remaining, thanks to a key assist from Tatiana Blichova. Blichova created a critical turnover behind the Beavers’ net and elegantly set up Pazmandi, who skillfully maneuvered to her right and found the net. This late goal ensured the teams entered the first intermission tied, even though the Lions outshot the Beavers 16-10, with Blichova and Pazmandi both making significant contributions.

The second period saw another goal from Bemidji’s Morgan Smith with under six minutes left, giving the Beavers a temporary lead. Despite this, Lindenwood’s defensive unit held strong, successfully killing off two power plays—including a tense five-on-three advantage for the Beavers. The Lions ended the second period trailing 2-1, but goaltender Lexington Secreto made an impressive 19 consecutive saves, keeping her team competitive.

In a dramatic turn of events during the third period, Pazmandi showcased her extraordinary talent again by scoring to tie the game at two with just 4:15 remaining. Starting from deep in her own zone, she executed an impressive coast-to-coast rush that culminated in a backhand goal, even as she fell to the ice. This phenomenal play pushed the game into overtime, marking the Lions’ third overtime match of the season.

The overtime was a thrilling display, with both goalkeepers making crucial saves. Secreto stopped four shots amid a total of nine saves from both teams. The closest chance for Lindenwood came shortly after overtime commenced when Blichova had a promising opportunity, but the Bemidji netminder was quick on the draw.

After neither team could score in the extra five minutes, a shootout was needed to determine the winner. Molly Henderson opened the shootout with a goal, while Secreto made two essential saves, maintaining Lindenwood’s chances. Despite Blichova’s failed attempt to score, Pazmandi stepped in, successfully securing the victory with a decisive goal in the shootout. This marked Lindenwood’s first shootout win of the season, elevating their record to 5-13-2.

Looking ahead, the Lions will face Mercyhurst University in their final series of the first half of the season, with the puck set to drop on Friday at 4 p.m. CT.
