City employees collaborate with highly trained K-9s to enhance their work effectiveness.
Today, in celebration of National Dog Day, we shine a spotlight on teams that incorporate dogs into their operations. These exceptional K-9s assist our employees in various tasks, significantly contributing to their success.
EMS Therapy Dogs
In February 2023, the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) launched a Therapy Dog Program aimed at fostering mental health resilience. Initiated by medic Taylor Jones, the program has expanded to include 13 dogs that provide comfort to EMS personnel and local hospital staff. Managing the program entails coordinating a schedule of therapy shifts, nurturing relationships with the dogs’ owners, and arranging visits after high-stress emergency calls.
Police K9 Unit
Within the Virginia Beach Police Department, the K-9 unit supports patrol officers and responds to critical situations, such as burglaries and missing persons cases, as well as requests for tracking suspects or evidence. The unit consists of 14 patrol dog handlers, of which five K-9 teams are trained in explosives detection, three focus on narcotics, and three are involved in SWAT operations.
Police Comfort Dogs
Comfort dogs serve a crucial function in enhancing officer well-being by alleviating the long-term impacts of trauma and stress. In 2021, an English Labrador named Geo (“Gigi”) and a golden retriever named Simba were officially sworn in as law enforcement officers, integrating them into the department. Their handlers, who are master police officers, also take on the role of comfort dog facilitators.
We are grateful for these canine companions who significantly contribute to our workforce and the community.
