Chair of the 14th Pacific Community Conference, Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala of Tonga, announced that Dr. Paula Vivili has been appointed as the new Director-General of the Pacific Community (SPC). This significant announcement took place during the closing session of the conference held in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.
Dr. Vivili will be the 23rd Director-General of SPC and notably the first Tongan to assume this pivotal role. His appointment arrives at a critical juncture as the Pacific region faces escalating challenges due to climate change, emphasizing the need for resilience and equitable transition for its communities.
In expressing his gratitude, Dr. Vivili stated, “It is an honour and a privilege to be given the trust of the members to serve the Pacific Community as Director-General.” He conveyed his eagerness to work closely with member states, partners, and the dedicated SPC staff to strengthen the organization’s vision and effectiveness through collaboration and collective decision-making.
Bringing a wealth of experience to the position, Dr. Vivili has an extensive background in public health. He has served as the Deputy Director General for Science and Capability at SPC for five years and was previously the Director of the Public Health Division for six years. Additionally, he has nearly two decades of experience with Tonga’s Ministry of Health.
Outgoing Director-General Dr. Stuart Minchin, who is set to lead the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, expressed confidence in Dr. Vivili’s ability to advance SPC’s mission. He highlighted the organization’s role in pursuing shared goals for the Pacific community.
Dr. Vivili holds advanced qualifications in Human Nutrition, Medicine, Ophthalmology, and International Public Health from renowned institutions. He is scheduled to officially begin his tenure as Director-General in November 2025, succeeding Minchin, who has led the organization since 2020.
This leadership transition marks a promising advancement for the Pacific region, with expectations that Dr. Vivili will enhance collaboration and tackle the urgent challenges facing Pacific communities. His leadership is poised to foster regional development and promote environmental sustainability, ensuring a better future for the Pacific Community.
