The New England Patriots have made another roster move, trading linebacker Keion White to the San Francisco 49ers, marking a significant step as they continue to reshape their team. This transaction sheds light on Bill Belichick’s initial enthusiasm for White, who was drafted by the Patriots with the 46th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated revealed insights about Belichick’s high regard for White during an appearance on NBC Sports Boston’s “Arbella Early Edition.” Breer noted that Belichick was keen on selecting White much earlier in the draft, even favoring him over cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who was ultimately chosen at No. 17. “If it were up to Bill Belichick and Bill Belichick alone, Keion White might have been their first-round pick in 2023, and not Christian Gonzalez,” Breer stated, adding that Belichick was persuaded to opt for Gonzalez instead.
Moreover, Phil Perry highlighted that the Patriots traded down three spots during the draft, feeling confident in either selecting Gonzalez or White, demonstrating their strong belief in both players.
While Gonzalez has made an impact, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 after bouncing back from an injury-shortened rookie season, the same cannot be said for White. The 26-year-old has struggled to find his footing under head coach Mike Vrabel, accumulating just 123 defensive snaps in five games before being traded.
As the Patriots look to improve their performance—currently ranking 19th in passing defense and allowing over 300 passing yards in each of the first two games—the decision to move White could signal a shift in strategy as they seek to enhance their roster for continued competition. This trade reflects the team’s willingness to adapt, even if it means parting ways with players they once held in high regard.
