FOXBORO, Mass. — An inspiring story emerged from the recent NFL playoffs as Shelly Sepulveda, a Medway nurse battling ovarian cancer, received a heartwarming surprise from the New England Patriots organization. Team owner Robert Kraft and his wife, Dr. Dana Kraft, invited Shelly to the sidelines before Sunday’s playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers, where they gifted her tickets to Super Bowl LX.
“When I’m here I don’t think about cancer, I watch the Patriots,” Shelly expressed, highlighting the joy and distraction football brings amid her health struggles.
Shelly, a dedicated neonatal intensive care nurse, has selflessly contributed to her community by fostering children affected by addiction and adopting five kids with her wife, Tami. Diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2024, she has endured significant health challenges, including nine hospitalizations in the past year and reliance on oxygen since October.
Previously, Shelly had hoped to attend a Celtics game, for which her son’s girlfriend, Emma Barucci, purchased tickets. Unfortunately, her hospital stay for necessary blood and platelet transfusions prevented her from attending. In a touching gesture, the Celtics organization sent her an autographed basketball as a surprise, recognizing her long-standing devotion as a fan.
Despite her health challenges, Shelly has checked off milestones from her bucket list, such as visiting the Grand Ol’ Opry. Her sister-in-law even stepped in to hike part of the Appalachian Trail on her behalf when she was too unwell to make the trip herself.
With her recent invitation to the Divisional Round matchup against the Houston Texans, there’s hope that Shelly will get the chance to watch her beloved Patriots as they compete for a spot in the Super Bowl.
This uplifting narrative showcases the compassion within the sports community, reminding us all of the strength found in unity and the spirit of giving. Shelly’s journey not only highlights her resilience but also embodies the enduring connection that sports can foster among fans.
