Patriots Pre-Season Showdown: Key Position Battles and Last-Minute Decisions!

As the New England Patriots prepare for their Pre-Season finale against the Washington Commanders, all healthy players are expected to participate, according to Head Coach Jerod Mayo. The first unit needs improvement, with quarterback Jacoby Brissett struggling in the previous two preseason games. In particular, during last week’s outing, Brissett’s interception at the goal line turned the tide, allowing Philadelphia to score off a 47-yard return.

The offensive line remains a significant concern. Vederian Lowe, who had been making progress in training camp, is sidelined with a back injury. This development could force the team to adjust their lineup, with Chuks Okorafor struggling to transition from right to left tackle and rookie Caeden Wallace facing similar challenges. The Patriots had hoped to draft a left tackle but were caught off guard in the second round, leading to uncertainty in the position.

With Lowe out, Mike Onwenu is expected at right tackle, while Layden Robinson, who has been highly rated according to Pro Football Focus, will play right guard. David Andrews may start at center but could soon give way to Nick Leverett due to minor injuries. The lineup will also see Sidy Sow at left guard and Okorafor at left tackle. Caeden Wallace will get playing time with the second unit, and Liam Fornadel will serve as the third center, despite ongoing issues with the exchange.

At quarterback, Brissett holds the starting role, while rookie Malik Maye is the backup. Although Brissett’s performances have been lackluster in the preseason, he is expected to play a couple of series Sunday. There’s a desire to see Maye get some opportunities with the first unit, which is uncommon in a final preseason game but necessary for their timing and chemistry.

The wide receiver position has become competitive, with Ja’lynn Polk emerging as the primary target and Pop Douglas closely following. Tyquan Thornton is also in the mix as a starter, but it remains uncertain if he has developed the necessary skills to excel against defensive backs. KJ Osborn is making a late push for a roster spot, while Kayshon Boutte and Javon Baker have faced challenges. Reagor is also a contender, particularly with his kickoff return capabilities.

On the defensive line, the loss of Christian Barmore to blood clots is a significant setback, placing him on injured reserve for the season. The cut of Mike Purcells raised some eyebrows, as he was one of the few defensive linemen equipped for the nose tackle position. Detrich Wise and Armon Watts are both underperforming, which may jeopardize their roster spots. Jeremiah Pharms has stood out and may replace Barmore, while Dan Ekuale has been consistent in pass rush scenarios.

Battles are ongoing in the cornerback and safety positions, with Isaiah Bolden and Shaun Wade vying for a spot, as well as UDFA Dell Pettus competing against veteran Josh Bledsoe, with Pettus appearing to have the upper hand based on recent performances. Azizi Hearns overcame difficulties in practice and performed well in games, while Jaylinn Hawkins seems set to start at free safety.

The kicking competition remains tight, with Joey Slye showing slight superiority over Chad Ryland, who needs a strong performance on Sunday to secure his position.

Lastly, William Bradley-King is making a case for a role as an edge player, stepping up in the absence of Josh Uche. Expectations are that Bradley-King, along with Oshane Ximenes and Christian Ellis, will see significant playing time in the upcoming game.
