The New England Patriots faced a significant setback as they placed cornerback Marcellas Dial on injured reserve due to a torn ACL sustained during practice. The 24-year-old Dial, a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft, had been primarily contributing on special teams during his rookie season but had been gaining more defensive snaps with top cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis sidelined. His chances to make the 53-man roster appeared promising given his role as a backup slot corner behind Marcus Jones.
With Dial’s injury, it is anticipated that the Patriots will carry at least five cornerbacks, including Gonzalez, Davis, Jones, and breakout camp star D.J. James, along with Alex Austin. The team also has other options if they choose to add a sixth cornerback, such as seventh-round pick Kobee Minor, undrafted rookie Brandon Crossley, or 2023 seventh-round pick Isaiah Bolden.
In addition to Dial’s injury, the Patriots made several other roster moves on Tuesday. Defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy was also placed on injured reserve, as he was struggling to maintain a spot in a crowded defensive line. Conversely, the team has bolstered its roster by signing running back JaMycal Hasty, who had previously appeared in 15 games for the Patriots last season, along with undrafted rookie defensive tackle Bryce Ganious, who participated in the team’s rookie minicamp.
These changes reflect the Patriots’ ongoing adjustments as they prepare for the season, showcasing their resilience in facing injuries and their commitment to building a competitive roster. The addition of players like Hasty and Ganious could provide necessary depth while the team navigates the challenges ahead.
