Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Darius Harris, who has previously won three Super Bowl titles, is making significant strides as the New England Patriots prepare for their matchup against the New York Jets. On Thursday, the Patriots elevated Harris, alongside running back D’Ernest Johnson, from their practice squad for the second consecutive week. This marks their third elevation, underscoring the team’s reliance on their experience as they navigate injuries within the roster.
The Patriots face a challenging lineup as they ruled out four starters earlier this week. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson, linebacker Christian Elliss, receiver Kayshon Boutte, and tight end Austin Hooper will not play, creating further opportunity for Harris and Johnson.
D’Ernest Johnson, a seasoned running back with seven years of experience in the NFL, joined the Patriots practice squad on October 29 after his release from the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson has accumulated 990 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 98 career games, with his standout season in 2021 yielding a career-high 534 yards with the Cleveland Browns. As Stevenson has missed the last three games due to a toe injury, Johnson has stepped up to provide depth and support in both running and special teams, recently logging his first carry with the Patriots for one yard.
On the other hand, Darius Harris, 29, has transitioned into a key special teams role after his time with the Chiefs. His tenure included participation in Super Bowls LV and LVII, where he demonstrated prowess as both a reserve linebacker and a contributor on special teams. Last season alone, he made 43 tackles and recorded 1.5 sacks, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
With both players now at the maximum number of practice squad elevations, it is imperative for the Patriots to secure their positions on the active roster should they wish to continue utilizing them throughout the season. The elevation of Harris and Johnson reflects the team’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge amid lineup challenges, providing hope for fans as the Patriots aim for a successful game against their rivals.
