FOXBOROUGH — In response to Kayshon Boutte’s hamstring injury, which raises questions about his availability for Week 10, the New England Patriots have signed wide receiver Brenden Rice to their practice squad. Rice, formerly with the Los Angeles Chargers, is notable for being the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.
Head Coach Mike Vrabel explained the reasoning behind bringing Rice into the fold, emphasizing his size and ability to learn quickly. “I think that was something that’s important at this time of year, being able to get a guy in here that can help us at multiple spots if something happens. Start on the practice squad, and then everybody has to prepare like a starter,” said Vrabel.
Brenden Rice had a brief stint with the Chargers, playing in just three games during his rookie season after being selected in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL draft out of the University of Southern California. Unfortunately, he was released by Los Angeles in August as part of their final roster decisions.
With the addition of Rice, the Patriots aim to bolster their receiving options and enhance their preparedness for upcoming challenges in the season. This move reflects their commitment to adapt and strengthen the team, especially as injury concerns arise.
