FOXBOROUGH – Khyiris Tonga, the New England Patriots’ imposing defensive tackle, has transitioned from a joking proposal on the practice field to a surprising offensive contributor. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 335 pounds, Tonga has established a reputation for his formidable presence on the defensive line during his tenure with teams like Chicago, Minnesota, and Arizona. This season, however, he has taken on a new role, showcasing his versatility on the field.
The shift began when Mike Vrabel, the team’s head coach, humorously suggested that Tonga prepare for goal-line situations that might require him to step in as a fullback. What started as light-hearted banter quickly turned into reality when Tonga took the field for his first snap at fullback during the Patriots’ recent victory over Atlanta. His performance in Tampa Bay last Sunday marked a career-high, with Tonga playing eight offensive snaps alongside his regular defensive duties.
“It was just a joke,” Tonga recalled. “Next thing you know, I’m over here sitting with the O-line, looking at D-line fronts. It’s fun. I enjoy it.”
At 29 years old and in his fifth NFL season, Tonga has become an unsung hero for the Patriots. This year, he has brought a disruptive edge to the defensive line, starting four games and recording 16 tackles, two for loss, along with a pass breakup and quarterback hit.
