Patrick Fishburn: Ogden’s Rising Star Set to Shine at PGA Championship

Patrick Fishburn, a talented golfer from Ogden, is looking forward to making his mark at the 107th PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a challenging start to his season. Despite missing the cut at the Myrtle Beach Classic—his third consecutive missed cut—Fishburn views this experience as a hidden opportunity rather than a setback. After his rounds of 73 and 74, he quickly regrouped, packed his bags, and made the three-hour journey to Charlotte for what is his first major championship.

“It’s a dream come true,” Fishburn expressed, reflecting on his childhood aspirations of playing at the highest level. He had the chance to practice at Quail Hollow, which he describes as an impressive and vast 7,626-yard layout that aligns well with his strengths as one of the longest hitters on tour. The Golf course is often compared to Augusta National in terms of its beauty and challenge, making it an exciting venue for the athletes.

At 32 years old, Fishburn has established himself on the PGA Tour during his second season, currently ranking 71st on the PGA Championship Points List. His entry into this prominent event was made possible when fellow golfer Billy Horschel had to withdraw due to hip surgery.

Accompanying Fishburn in the tournament is Tony Finau, a more seasoned veteran with extensive experience in majors. Fishburn and Finau practiced together, reinforcing a bond that has him leaning on experienced friends like Finau, Zac Blair, and Daniel Summerhays for insights on navigating the challenges of a major.

Fishburn’s recent form includes strong performances, such as a tied sixth finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii and fifth place at the Valero Texas Open, showcasing his potential to compete at Quail Hollow. Despite grappling with some putting issues he’s identified, he remains optimistic about his chances.

With support from family and friends, Fishburn’s parents, high school buddies, and his mentor Summerhays will be cheering him on, though his wife, Madison, eight months pregnant with their third child, will not be joining him this time. “What a proud moment for Utah and the Fishburn family,” said Rob Despain, Fishburn’s agent, highlighting the significance of this milestone in his career.

Fishburn is focused on the process and aims for a solid performance, hoping to make the cut and perhaps even contend on Sunday. His journey illustrates not just the struggle of the sport but also the community and relationships that bolster a golfer’s career.
