The Fiji Police Force has issued a warning regarding the increasing instances of reckless and impatient driving on the nation’s roads. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kasiano Vusonilawe highlighted that many drivers are neglecting fundamental roadway rules, particularly in terms of yielding to others and demonstrating respect for fellow motorists.
ACP Vusonilawe specifically noted that drivers of public service vehicles are particularly prone to exhibiting poor road behavior. The police have observed a concerning trend where drivers are ignoring basic traffic rules, which contributes to unnecessary congestion on the roads.
“The observations from traffic officers indicate a lack of patience among drivers,” said Vusonilawe. “Rules such as adhering to the right-hand rule and yielding when turning are often disregarded. Some drivers are completely lacking in road etiquette.”
The ACP strongly encourages all drivers to practice patience, adhere to traffic regulations, and exercise responsible driving methods, especially in crowded areas. He emphasized that traffic officers have seen instances where public service vehicle drivers fail to follow established protocols, highlighting the need for greater respect among all road users.
Irimaia Rokosawa, the Chief Executive of the Land Transport Authority, has acknowledged the situation and stated that the agency is actively working to identify opportunities for improving driving standards. “Our goal is to enhance driving regulations and behaviors continuously,” Rokosawa remarked.
Impatient and reckless driving not only increases congestion but also elevates the risk of accidents across Fiji. Authorities are calling on all motorists to remain calm and compliant with traffic laws to ensure safer roads for everyone.
