Paterson Bids Farewell to a Political Giant: Bill Pascrell Jr. Passes Away at 87

Bill Pascrell Jr., the longtime Democratic representative for the Paterson area, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 87, as confirmed by his family.

A former mayor of Paterson, Pascrell was first elected to Congress in 1996 and served on the House Ways and Means Committee since 2007. Known for his tenacious and direct approach, he cultivated a persona as a tough, street-savvy politician who engaged in numerous political battles. He was proud of his relationships with local law enforcement and firefighters.

Pascrell was particularly recognized for his support of first responders, having worked to secure funding for his district and played a crucial role in establishing the Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement Act of 2000, the sole federal program providing grants directly to fire departments nationwide.

In recent months, Pascrell had faced health challenges, including a 24-day hospitalization that required breathing assistance. After being released, he encountered a medical setback on August 11, necessitating his transfer to a medical center.

Among his notable achievements was the recognition of the Great Falls playground in his childhood as the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park during Barack Obama’s presidency. He also co-chaired the Italian-American Congressional Delegation.

His family announced his passing on social media, expressing profound sorrow and highlighting his enduring commitment to his constituents and love for Paterson. “Bill lived his entire life in Paterson and had an unwavering love for the city he grew up in and served,” they stated.

Pascrell had a notable political career, winning 14 congressional elections, with a particularly memorable victory in 2012 amidst redistricting, where he defeated fellow Democrat Steve Rothman in a primary. This year, he won a primary against Mayor Mohamed Khairullah, while anticipating a general election against Republican Billy Prempeh.

Before his congressional career, Pascrell was active in local politics, having served in the state Assembly and as mayor of Paterson. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was also involved in education, starting as a high school history teacher and later becoming an adjunct professor.

Born and raised in Paterson, Pascrell graduated from St. John the Baptist High School and furthered his education at Fordham University, where he earned degrees in journalism and philosophy. Over the years, he held various political roles, culminating in his election to Congress.

Pascrell is survived by his wife, Elsie, three children, and five grandchildren.
