Pat Surtain II Shoulder Injury Prompts MRI, Broncos Prepare for Next Man Up

DENVER — In a challenging game for the Denver Broncos, reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II exited during the first half with a left shoulder injury, shortly before halftime of their 44-24 victory over the Cowboys. The two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection will undergo tests, including an MRI, to assess the extent of the injury.

Surtain’s potential absence is a significant concern for the Broncos, as defensive coordinator Vance Joseph emphasized, “Everything we do starts with Pat.” Linebacker Justin Strnad expressed hope for Surtain’s quick recovery, recognizing his crucial role in the team’s defense, stating, “Obviously we hope he’s healthy and … we’ll adjust if we need to.”

The injury occurred with just 22 seconds remaining in the first half when Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott completed a 7-yard pass to receiver George Pickens. During the tackle, Surtain’s left arm and shoulder twisted awkwardly. He was seen grimacing as he made his way to the locker room, clutching his shoulder, and did not return to the game after halftime. This was particularly tough for Surtain, who had briefly left the game earlier due to a lower right leg injury.

In Surtain’s absence, Kris Abrams-Draine, a fifth-round pick from the 2024 draft, stepped in and managed to record eight tackles in the second half. Broncos head coach Sean Payton commended the performance of Abrams-Draine and the secondary, stating, “I thought, shoot, pretty good, pretty good.” He emphasized the unpredictability of injuries, but expressed pride in his team’s resilience when faced with challenges.

Despite Surtain’s injury, the Broncos’ defense managed to apply pressure, sacking Prescott twice and limiting him to no touchdown passes, a performance that marks only the second time this season he’s been held scoreless. Cornerback Riley Moss praised Abrams-Draine for his contributions, noting, “[Abrams-Draine] came in and did a great job. We had a great week of practice, maybe the best in my [three] years here, and it showed.”

If Surtain is forced to sit out, the Broncos’ cornerback lineup will feature some of the youngest players in the league, including Abrams-Draine in his second year, rookie Jahdae Barron, and veteran players Ja’Quan McMillian and Moss in their fourth seasons. Moss faced challenges during the game, receiving two flags for pass interference in a brief span.

Surtain’s durability is notable; he has only missed two games in his professional career, once as a rookie in 2021 and another last season. As the Broncos look ahead, the team remains hopeful for a swift recovery for their star defender, emphasizing the next-man-up mentality that has become vital in the face of adversity.
