Parker McCollum Reveals New Album Secrets at CMA Fest

During the bustling CMA Fest, Parker McCollum offered insights on his highly anticipated self-titled studio album, set to release on June 27. He joined hosts Amber Anderson and Kelly Sutton for a candid discussion on Amazon’s Country Heat Weekly podcast, held at Nashville’s Music City Center.

Expressing deep affection for this album, McCollum stated, “It’s the first record I’ve ever made that I’ve really just been super in love with.” This admission marked a significant statement from the artist, who has previously struggled with self-doubt regarding his work. He humorously noted that his newfound confidence might spell disaster for his career, yet it felt right to title his fifth album after himself.

Reflecting on the creative process, McCollum revealed that he initially faced uncertainty during the seven-day recording session in New York City, fearing it might set him back in his career. However, the last day in the studio brought a revelation. He shared, “We just sat in the studio and listened to everything we had cut and I just fell in love with it” — a moment that reaffirmed his passion and connection to the music.

The album features 14 tracks, combining songs he has cherished for years alongside fresh creations. One notable piece was written when he was just 15 in a Jack in the Box parking lot, while another emerged spontaneously in the studio shortly before recording. He described the album as a genuine reflection of himself, with his oldest and newest songs placed sequentially on the record.

The project boasted contributions from respected figures in the country music scene. Producer Frank Liddell led the effort, with the acclaimed Lee Ann Womack providing her powerful vocals for the opening track, and her daughter, Aubrey Sellers, contributing background vocals throughout.

McCollum’s intense week in New York was not without its challenges, but his determination paid off. “I couldn’t be more proud and more happy of it, and it’s the record I always wondered if I was good enough to make,” he expressed, emphasizing that this album represents the most authentic version of himself he has ever shared through music.

Listeners can catch the full interview when it airs on July 7 on Amazon’s Country Heat Weekly podcast. McCollum’s journey in crafting this album stands as a testament to his growth as an artist and his unwavering commitment to his musical path. The anticipation surrounding his self-titled album showcases the potential for a renewed connection with fans, highlighting the beauty of personal expression in art.
