Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, has reiterated Fiji’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the nation’s security agencies as they face ongoing challenges. His comments come in light of reports highlighting two Fijians charged with drug possession in Australia and a significant drug interception in Fiji that involved over four tonnes of illicit substances earlier this year.
Gavoka emphasized the importance of recognizing the broader context of these issues, stating that while the tourism industry collaborates closely with the Fiji Police Force and various stakeholders to enhance border and airport security, it is essential for the public to view the situation with a comprehensive perspective. “The police and the whole country are aware of the threats, and I’m not pessimistic about the outcome. We will overcome this,” he expressed confidently.
The Minister requested responsible media coverage on topics impacting Fiji’s international reputation, noting that sensational headlines about drugs can create a skewed negative perception. “This is the most beautiful country in the world. Visitors are coming here in droves, and we must remember that Fiji’s story is also one of beauty, resilience, and warmth,” he asserted.
Gavoka reiterated that while drug enforcement remains a national priority, there is an equally strong need to highlight the positive attributes that make Fiji a premier global tourist destination.
