Panthers Sign Niko Mikkola to Eight-Year, $40 Million Extension

Former New York Rangers defenseman Niko Mikkola has secured a substantial contract extension with the Florida Panthers, signing an eight-year deal worth $40 million. This agreement will take effect in the 2026-27 season.

Mikkola joined the Panthers during the 2023 NHL off-season after concluding his 2022-23 season with the Rangers. Since his arrival, he has established himself as an essential component of Florida’s defense and has celebrated two Stanley Cup victories. The Panthers’ decision to offer him a long-term contract reflects his significant contributions and their confidence in his abilities moving forward.

Originally acquired by the Rangers alongside forward Vladimir Tarasenko during the 2022-23 season from the St. Louis Blues, Mikkola played 31 games for the Rangers, where he tallied one goal and three points, in addition to making an impact defensively with 38 blocks and 55 hits, while maintaining a plus-4 rating. In the playoffs, he participated in seven games, recording two assists and a plus-2 rating, showcasing his readiness for high-stakes competition.

With this new contract, Mikkola is expected to continue his important role in Florida, reinforcing their defense in the seasons to come. The Panthers’ commitment to him signals a promising future as they aim to build on recent successes and strive for further championships.
