DAYTON, Ohio — The UNI volleyball team faced a tough challenge against Ohio State, ultimately losing in four sets during the final match of the Dayton Flyer Invitational at the Frericks Center.
In a matchup that showcased the Panther offense against their Big Ten rival, who received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) top-25 poll, UNI aimed for its first win over a Big Ten opponent in six years. Although the Panthers demonstrated a well-rounded performance both offensively and defensively, Ohio State’s offensive prowess edged them out.
The Buckeyes started strong, building an early lead in the first set with 13 kills at a hitting percentage of .250. UNI fell behind 15-8 but fought back to narrow the gap with a 6-0 run. However, Ohio State’s strong serving, including three aces, allowed them to secure the first set 25-20.
In the second set, UNI took control early and maintained its lead, even as Ohio State mounted a late comeback. The Panthers enjoyed a nine-point lead after a 5-0 run, and despite Ohio State narrowing the score to 22-21, UNI closed the set 25-22 with contributions from Cassidy Hartman, who provided a crucial termination.
The tense third set featured 13 ties and five lead changes. UNI initially gained the upper hand with a 24-21 lead, bolstered by Kaitlyn Sellner and Kira Fallert’s solid play. Yet, Ohio State rallied back, finishing the set on a 5-0 run to win 26-24 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The final set was another gripping exchange, with Ohio State maintaining a lead through impressive offensive and defensive displays, including four blocks. UNI managed to challenge late in the set, saving consecutive set points and even acquiring set points of their own twice. However, Ohio State ultimately triumphed with a 29-27 win, clinching the match.
Both Hartman and Fallert led the Panthers with 17 kills each; Fallert also achieved a double-double with 11 digs. Olivia Tjernagel recorded a season-high 12 kills, while Erin Powers contributed a team-best 16 digs and three service aces. Sydney Golden set career highs in assists (34) and digs (8), and Sellner finished with four kills and a personal best in blocks.
In notable milestones, Saturday marked the first-ever meeting between UNI and Ohio State in volleyball. The last time the Panthers defeated a Big Ten team was on September 7, 2018, against Indiana.
Kira Fallert’s performance was her second double-double of the year and the 22nd of her career, leading all active Panther players. Olivia Tjernagel participated in her 100th career match without missing any games throughout her collegiate tenure, joining Fallert, who achieved this milestone the day prior against Florida International. Additionally, redshirt freshman defensive specialist Taryn Rice made her collegiate debut late in the fourth set.
The Panthers will return to the court next Friday, September 6, when they face SIU Edwardsville in the opening match of the North Dakota’s UND Classic in Grand Forks, with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
