The Carolina Panthers have announced the release of linebacker Josey Jewell. The 30-year-old linebacker has been dealing with health concerns, as he remains in concussion protocol following a head injury sustained during a game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 16 last season. Jewell has expressed his commitment to prioritizing his health and is hopeful about a potential return once his symptoms improve.
Jewell joined the Panthers on a three-year contract in the 2024 offseason and demonstrated strong performance during his time with the team, starting 12 games in the previous season. He recorded 97 tackles, ranking second on the team, along with 3.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception.
In the wake of Jewell’s departure, the Panthers have bolstered their linebacker corps by signing former Rams starter Christian Rozeboom and retain 2024 third-round draft pick Trevin Wallace. Other linebackers currently on the roster include Claudin Cherelus, Jacoby Windmon, Jon Rhattigan, Bam Martin-Scott, and Tuasivi Nomura.
Throughout his NFL career spanning seven seasons, Jewell accumulated a total of 550 tackles, three interceptions, 12.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, and 22 passes defended in 90 games played. The Panthers are now focusing on reinforcing their lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season, demonstrating adaptability and resilience amidst player changes.
While Jewell’s release marks a significant moment for both the player and the team, his health remains a priority, and there is hope that he will be able to return to the field in the future. The organization is working to create a competitive environment as they move forward, with new opportunities for the current roster to step up.
