DETROIT — The Pitt Panthers’ final game of the season became a remarkable showcase of resilience and tenacity, stretching into the longest overtime in NCAA bowl history before they ultimately fell to Toledo, 48-46, in the GameAbove Sports Bowl.
Freshman quarterback Julian Dugger, a native of Pittsburgh, delivered an impressive performance that almost secured a historic victory for the Panthers. Despite the loss, Dugger’s contributions were noteworthy, as he completed 7 of 13 passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 88 yards and another touchdown.
The game began with Toledo taking an early lead, highlighted by a fourth-down touchdown pass. However, Pitt quickly responded with defensive heroics when Kyle Louis blocked the extra point and returned it 85 yards for a score, putting Pitt ahead 6-2. Throughout the first half, Pitt struggled offensively, trailing 20-12 at halftime.
In the second half, Dugger’s presence invigorated the Panthers’ offense. He guided the team on a crucial 10-play, 71-yard drive that concluded with his first career touchdown pass. The Panthers managed to tie the game after a successful two-point conversion, showcasing their fighting spirit as the match progressed into overtime.
Unfortunately, despite trading scores with the Rockets and an impressive effort by both teams, Toledo pulled ahead in the fourth overtime by successfully converting a two-point attempt. The Panthers were unable to answer, marking the end of their season.
Pitt’s season concludes with a record of 7-6 (3-5 ACC), but it should be noted that the emergence of Dugger offers a promising outlook for the future. His performance hints at potential growth and development that could benefit the Panthers moving forward.
As Pitt reflects on this challenging season, there remains a sense of hope. The significant contributions from young players like Dugger provide a foundation for future successes and a chance to regroup and improve in the upcoming year. While the end of the season brings disappointment, it also sets the stage for renewed determination and ambition in 2025.
