The Carolina Panthers have officially signed linebacker Isaiah Simmons to their practice squad, a development announced on Tuesday. Simmons, a standout from Clemson University, was a top contender for the Panthers’ seventh overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, which ultimately went to Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derrick Brown. Instead, Simmons was selected eighth overall by the Arizona Cardinals.
During his three seasons with the Cardinals, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound linebacker participated in 50 games, accumulating 258 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four interceptions, and seven forced fumbles. His most recent regular-season appearance was with the New York Giants in 2024, having also spent the summer with the Green Bay Packers.
This signing comes amid ongoing injury challenges for the Panthers at the inside linebacker position. In their recent 20-9 loss against the San Francisco 49ers, the team entered the match without usual starters Trevin Wallace and Christian Rozeboom, and they faced further setbacks as Claudin Cherelus exited the game with a concussion.
To accommodate Simmons on the practice squad, the Panthers made the decision to release safety Trevian Thomas. This move signifies the team’s commitment to bolstering their defense as they navigate through a challenging season.
With Simmons’ experience and talent, his addition could provide a significant boost to a Panthers squad in need of reinforcements on defense, offering hope to fans as the team strives to turn their season around.
