Panama has declared a state of emergency in the western province of Bocas del Toro due to escalating anti-government protests, which have resulted in significant violence and property damage. The unrest, which began two months ago, intensified recently, leading to clashes with law enforcement that resulted in one fatality and around 30 injuries, including several police officers.
Protesters have reportedly blocked roads with tree trunks, prompting a large-scale police operation aimed at clearing these barricades. The situation became particularly volatile in the city of Changuinola on Thursday, where groups of hooded individuals looted businesses, set part of a baseball stadium on fire, and temporarily took over the local airport, leading to over 50 arrests.
Juan Carlos Orillac, the minister of the presidency, announced the emergency measures to restore peace and order, including suspending constitutional guarantees in Bocas del Toro. This move is intended to prevent gatherings by groups that could incite further violence and looting, endangering people and property.
The protests are fueled by grievances over pension reforms implemented by the government, which local workers, including those from the US company Chiquita Brands, argue will force them into longer working conditions. Following these reforms, Chiquita laid off thousands of workers, prompting strikes that have seen some protests being called off while others continue.
