Alex Palou achieved a remarkable milestone in the 2025 IndyCar season by securing the pole position at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a remarkable gap of 0.4099 seconds over Graham Rahal. This marks the largest difference for a pole lap in more than two years, echoing a similar moment back in March 2023 when Romain Grosjean edged Colton Herta by 0.4155 seconds at St. Petersburg.
During a challenging qualification session, Palou faced a significant front right tire lockup on his first flying lap, forcing him to abandon that attempt. However, he rebounded impressively, clocking a stunning lap time of 1:09.3417 to solidify his position at the front of the grid.
In the press conference, Palou attributed his success partly to being the only driver on fresh sticker tires during the Fast Six qualifying session. He will be using some of the tires from qualification that experienced degradation. He expressed uncertainty about how this would impact his race strategy, saying, “I think all the drivers they have a preference on which tire to run always, and tomorrow you cannot have that preference.” The unpredictable nature of tire performance could lead to an exciting race with fluctuating strategies and outcomes.
