Palmeiras Strikes Big Deal: Ríos to Benfica for €30 Million!

Palmeiras has finalized the sale of midfielder Richard Ríos to Benfica in Portugal, with the transfer occurring during the current window. The transfer discussions had been ongoing for several days, ultimately agreeing on a transfer fee of 30 million euros (approximately R$ 200 million at the current exchange rate).

The professional approach from Benfica significantly influenced Palmeiras’ decision to accept the proposal. The Portuguese club requested the terms of the sale to formalize their offer, which prompted Palmeiras to give the green light for the negotiations to advance. An official announcement from both clubs is still pending.

Ríos has agreed to a five-season contract with Benfica and leaves Palmeiras after making a strong impression at the Club World Cup, where he contributed to the team’s journey to the quarterfinals. His move comes at a strategic time, as he views the project at Benfica as an opportunity for advancement in European football, following a similar path taken by Enzo Fernandez when he transitioned from Benfica to Chelsea.

Ríos hopes that gaining experience in Europe will also better prepare him for the 2026 World Cup with the Colombian national team. It is expected that Ríos will not participate in the upcoming match against Atlético-MG in the Brazilian Championship.

Palmeiras was in no rush to negotiate Ríos’s transfer and maintained a firm stance regarding his departure, insisting on the set fee of 30 million euros as non-negotiable throughout the discussions. This assertiveness mirrors their previous dealings, such as the transfer of defender Vitor Reis to Manchester City, where the club also held out for a premium fee.

Contractual details reveal that Ríos had a contract with Palmeiras extending until December 2028, with a buy-out clause of 100 million euros for foreign clubs. Palmeiras holds 70% of his economic rights, with the remainder belonging to other entities including Guarani, Flamengo, and the player’s representatives.

During his time at Palmeiras, Ríos played 138 matches, scored 11 goals, and provided 10 assists, contributing to the team’s victories in the 2023 Brazilian Championship and the 2024 São Paulo Championship.

Palmeiras is showcasing a disciplined negotiation strategy that may benefit them in future player transfers, setting a precedent for valuing their talent, which emphasizes their commitment to fostering a competitive football environment.
