Pacu Path Festival: A Cultural Gem Set to Shine in 2025!

The Pacu Path tradition, an integral part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, is set to gain broader recognition through its inclusion in the Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) 2025 program. Initiated by the Ministry of Tourism, this strategic initiative aims to showcase prominent cultural events from across the archipelago and enhance tourism centered on local cultural wealth on a global scale.

This acknowledgment of Pacu Path highlights its historical, artistic, and social significance that has thrived for centuries in Kuantan Singingi, Riau. Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, clarified that the support for Pacu Line has been longstanding, contrary to the belief that the ministry’s interest sparked solely due to the recent viral phenomenon associated with “aura farming.” She emphasized that their backing is driven by the desire to promote cultural tourism and harness the unique appeal of traditional events, regardless of social media trends.

Widiyanti noted that the recent viral popularity of Pacu Line illustrates how traditional Indonesian culture can find relevance in the digital age with creative presentation. This event has captivated a global audience due to its visual excitement, strong sense of community, and deeply rooted local values.

As one of the four selected events from Riau for KEN 2025, Pacu Path has undergone a rigorous selection process, ensuring it receives priority support for promotions and infrastructure development. The ministry is focused not only on marketing strategies through digital platforms like MAY Indonesia and Pesona Indonesia but also closely collaborating with local governments to enhance the event’s quality, including facilities and event management.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy’s partnership with industry players, such as the online travel agent Atourin, aims to merge event promotion with tour packages for Pacu Line, appealing to both domestic and international visitors.

The economic benefits anticipated from the event are significant; estimates suggest that the financial circulation during the festival could reach around Rp75 billion, with the potential for increased hotel and homestay occupancy in the cities of Pekanbaru and Kuansing. Data from the Riau Provincial Tourism Office predicts a 30 percent increase in tourist visits this year compared to last year, attributed to extensive promotional efforts and rising interest in Pacu Line.

With roots dating back to the 17th century, the Pacu Path originated from the local custom of transporting crops using large boats, evolving into the traditional boat racing competition we know today. Now recognized as an intangible cultural heritage, the Pacu Path Festival blends water sports with community bonding and authentic cultural expression, crafting a unique tourism experience.

The 2025 Pacu Line is scheduled to unfold on August 20, 2025, at Narosa Bank, Teluk Kuantan City, in Riau Province, brightening the prospects for cultural tourism in the region. This event not only signifies the revival and preservation of local culture but also serves as a catalyst for community development and economic growth, showcasing Indonesia’s rich heritage to an ever-expanding audience.
