Packers Face Right Tackle Dilemma Amid O-Line Shuffle

The Green Bay Packers made an unexpected move on the field as they dealt with Zach Tom’s absence at right tackle. Opting to deploy Jordan Morgan, predominantly a left tackle, the team faced challenges as Morgan struggled to adapt, receiving low performance scores particularly in pass blocking. This decision raises questions about the Packers’ strategy in utilizing Morgan, who has been shuffled across multiple positions during training camp, potentially demanding too much from a relatively inexperienced player.

Packers’ head coach Matt LaFleur has acknowledged the difficulty and unintended consequences of asking Morgan to switch positions mid-game. “Especially when you look at [last Sunday], playing multiple spots in one game. I don’t think that’s easy on anybody, especially a guy who’s still a relatively young player,” remarked LaFleur, indicating a reevaluation of their approach might be necessary.

There are alternative players, such as Anthony Belton and Darian Kinnard, who have prior experience in the right tackle position. Belton, who has seen extensive preseason action at right tackle, could be a viable option to stabilize the line. Despite dealing with penalty issues, he has shown promise with his physical presence and ability to bolster the ground game. Notably, his performances have been comparatively stronger than Morgan’s recent outing.

A shift towards Belton as a more consistent substitute until Tom’s return could offer a steadier solution for the offensive line. Belton’s prior performance in preseason games gives him an edge over Morgan in terms of experience at right tackle, suggesting he could likely deliver a more reliable performance.

The inclination towards Belton over Kinnard also seems to reflect the team’s confidence in him, considering their investment and his development in the role. As Belton recovers from a recent absence in practice, the decision will hinge on his availability and readiness to assume the responsibility effectively. If he is fit, Belton’s involvement could be instrumental in maintaining the Packers’ offensive efficiency during this period of adjustment.
