Packers Face Quarterback Dilemma After Love’s Injury: What’s Next?

In the Green Bay Packers’ recent 34-29 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles, quarterback Jordan Love was assisted off the field with a left leg injury, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming Week 2 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

With Love’s status uncertain, the Packers have two internal options at quarterback: Sean Clifford and Malik Willis. Clifford has only completed one regular-season pass in his career, while Willis, who was acquired from the Tennessee Titans last month, has not yet thrown a pass for Green Bay. Clifford, who previously served as Love’s backup last season, would need to be elevated from the practice squad if the Packers choose to go that route. The team had opted to trade for Willis instead of retaining Clifford for a second season after a preseason battle with rookie Michael Pratt.

Willis made his debut as Love’s backup, taking the final two snaps of the game after Love’s injury, but did not complete a pass, ending with one incomplete attempt and a sack. Clifford traveled with the team but was not activated for the game. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst had opted against signing a veteran backup during the offseason, instead banking on Clifford’s preseason performance and Pratt’s potential.

However, both quarterbacks had underwhelming performances during training camp. After final cuts were made, both went unclaimed off waivers, with Clifford returning to the practice squad and Pratt joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad.

Willis, who started three games for the Titans as a rookie and had limited playtime last season, will be thrust into a significant role if Love is unable to play. Gutekunst expressed confidence in Willis’s development under the new coaching staff but acknowledged that it would be a challenge.

The Packers have not had a veteran backup quarterback since Blake Bortles was on the roster in 2021. As injuries pile up, the list of veteran quarterbacks available includes names like Ryan Tannehill and Trevor Siemian.

Love’s injury comes following his signing of a four-year, $220 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid players in the league. During the game, Love appeared to experience lower leg cramps, which, along with slippery conditions, affected several players on the field. Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark noted the seriousness of Love’s role in the franchise, voicing hope for his quick recovery.
