Packers Eye Cornerback Upgrade Ahead of Trade Deadline

With the NFL trade deadline approaching on Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers find themselves at a critical juncture as they seek ways to elevate their roster. Following their significant acquisition of star pass rusher Micah Parsons in August, the Packers now have another opportunity to strengthen their lineup, particularly in the cornerback position.

The departure of Jaire Alexander, who was released in June, left a noticeable void in the Packers’ secondary. Keisean Nixon has stepped up to fill this role, but recent performances have raised concerns about his capability as the team’s primary cornerback. Although Nixon had a commendable statistical outing in a recent game—allowing just one catch for one yard on two targets—his costly penalty that extended a drive for the Carolina Panthers highlighted potential deficiencies in critical situations. This penalty allowed the Panthers to score a touchdown, ultimately emphasizing the risks associated with leaving Nixon as the top corner.

Nixon’s overall numbers for the season, including 25 receptions and 264 yards allowed along with three touchdowns and eight pass breakups, are promising. However, his nine penalties, two of which were declined, suggest that he struggles with maintaining discipline as a CB1. Following the Packers’ bye week, teams appear to have taken advantage of this flaw. In the three games prior to their recent matchup, opponents targeted Nixon 19 times, resulting in 134 yards and three touchdowns, and he incurred six penalties during that span.

Addressing the situation, the Packers could explore the free agent market as a straightforward method for bolstering their cornerback group. Veteran Stephon Gilmore is still available, despite being 35 years old, and could bring veteran savvy after having a productive season with the Minnesota Vikings. Other considered options include James Bradberry or a high-upside acquisition like Asante Samuel Jr., provided he is cleared from injury.

The trade market, while having lost some notable candidates like Alexander and Michael Carter II recently, may still offer potential acquisitions. Seattle Seahawks’ Riq Woolen could provide added depth and may challenge Nixon for the starting cornerback position.

It’s crucial to underline that Nixon isn’t necessarily underperforming to the extent of losing his place on the roster. However, for the Packers to realistically aim for a championship run, they need to bring in further reinforcements at cornerback to relieve some pressure from Nixon. As he strives to quiet his critics, the Packers’ front office faces the task of making strategic decisions to enhance their secondary and fortify their chances in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
