Representatives from Fiji and other Pacific nations are engaging in a significant fellowship in Sydney, Australia, centered around Climate Change and its impact on the Pacific region. This initiative, organized by Australia’s Diplomacy Training Program (DTP) and supported by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs, aims to enhance regional partnerships and bolster the development capacity of these nations.
Clare Sidoti, Programs and Communications Manager at DTP, highlighted that the fellowship gathers individuals from seven Pacific Islands to exchange experiences related to human rights and climate issues. She emphasized the importance of solidarity, stating, “We’re bringing together Pacific representatives to share their advocacy, to raise awareness and also to tell stories to try and build up solidarity especially since we’re moving towards COP31.”
Participants will have the chance to visit three prominent Australian cities—Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne—interacting with a variety of stakeholders, including development NGOs, academic institutions specializing in climate and human rights, government ministries, and media organizations. This structured engagement aims to foster dialogue on the urgent impacts of climate change that threaten Oceania.
The Fijian delegation, already in Sydney, is prepared to actively contribute to discussions on the pressing climate-related challenges facing the Pacific.
