Pacific Unity Takes Center Stage as CRGA Opens in Tonga

Tuvalu’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Pasuna Tuaga, emphasized the importance of unity and innovation among Pacific nations while addressing the opening of the 55th Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA) in Nuku‘alofa, Tonga, on Monday. Tuaga, now chairing the CRGA, underscored the significance of the meeting at a pivotal moment for the Pacific Community (SPC) and the region at large.

“We gather at a critical time. Climate impacts, economic fragility, and shifting global dynamics remind us that business as usual is not an option. We must continue to be bold, collaborative, and innovative in shaping solutions that improve the lives of our people,” Tuaga stated, acknowledging the pressing challenges facing the region.

He expressed gratitude to the government and people of Tonga for their warm hospitality and formally recognized the leadership of outgoing Chair Tokelau during his term. “It is a privilege for us to gather here in Nuku‘alofa and experience the generosity and hospitality that Tonga is known for,” he added.

This gathering serves as a reflection of Tuvalu’s commitment to fostering a resilient and thriving Blue Pacific, with Tuaga declaring that the region’s strength lies in its unity. He paid homage to the legacy of the Pacific Community, which has been a cornerstone of regional cooperation for 78 years, providing essential scientific and technical support to advance collective priorities.

In his remarks, Tuaga urged delegates to continue embracing the principle of “unity through diversity,” respecting the unique needs of each member nation while collectively advocating for the Blue Pacific. He also highlighted SPC Director-General Dr. Stuart Minchin’s contributions as his term draws to a close, recognizing his leadership during challenging times for the region.

The Permanent Secretary encouraged participants to use the upcoming week not solely for policy discussions but also to strengthen personal and professional connections that underpin regional cooperation. “Distinguished delegates, we have important discussions ahead with a busy week ahead of us. However, outside this room, I encourage you to connect and strengthen the bonds that define us as a Pacific family,” Tuaga remarked.

In a call for alignment with the core values of the SPC—unity, care, stewardship, and generosity—Tuaga formally opened the meeting, inviting each member nation to partake in the communal pursuit of resilience and solidarity amidst the challenges faced by the Pacific.

This meeting, resonating with themes of collaboration and shared commitment reminiscent of previous forums, notably reflects an ongoing drive among Pacific leaders to unite against adversities, including economic challenges, climate change, and geopolitical tensions. By cultivating this spirit of collaboration, Pacific nations are taking meaningful steps toward a more equitable and prosperous future for all communities across the region.
