In his address, Peters pointed out that the Pacific islands are witnessing their “ocean of peace” being compromised in ways that diminish their ability to respond. He called upon Nordic countries to step up their involvement, citing shared values and interests that align with those of New Zealand. The minister voiced concerns about the increasing contestation in the region and highlighted the necessity for stronger partnerships, especially as both New Zealand and Nordic nations face similar strategic challenges.
Peters is currently in Stockholm for the inaugural New Zealand-Nordic 5 Foreign Ministers Meeting, having traveled from New Zealand on October 19 for discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation among countries that share a commitment to regional security and support for the Pacific. He reiterated that New Zealand, as a NATO partner country, has strategic ties with other Indo-Pacific members, including Australia, Japan, and South Korea, which facilitate discussions on vital issues such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, and defense capabilities.
This appeal for cooperation is particularly significant in light of current geopolitical conditions, where the ongoing shift in alliances among Pacific nations—such as the Solomon Islands’ 2019 switch from Taiwan to China—has created tensions.
