Pacific fisheries leaders have raised urgent concerns regarding the threats posed by climate change, global pressures, and mounting demand on the tuna industry, signaling an immediate need for reforms and sustainable investments. During the Second Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) Partner Symposium, Fisheries Committee Chair Mona Ainnu emphasized that while the accomplishments of the Pacific’s fisheries are commendable, these successes cannot be taken for granted.
Ainnu underscored that tuna plays a pivotal role in numerous Pacific economies, financing essential public services, strengthening fiscal stability, supporting local livelihoods, and enhancing sovereignty over marine resources. To preserve this vital economic foundation, she stressed the necessity of adapting strategies and enhancing institutional capacities.
Reflecting on nearly fifty years of cooperative ocean management, Ainnu pointed out that the Pacific has emerged as a global leader in sustainable tuna fisheries through this collaborative approach. “As ministers, we view this reform process not as a critique of the past, but as an investment in the future,” she said, indicating that a more robust Secretariat will enhance service delivery, governance, and accountability in addressing new challenges.
The Fisheries Committee is actively conducting a review aimed at strengthening the FFA Secretariat, ensuring that it can effectively respond to a rapidly evolving environment. An independent review has provided crucial insights and recommendations, framing these reforms as forward-thinking investments rather than criticisms of past efforts.
Ainnu called for Pacific-led collaborations with development partners to implement effective management strategies, build climate resilience, and develop modern monitoring solutions, all supported by reliable investments. She emphasized that these investments must prioritize member ownership, transparency, and long-term sustainability, with governance firmly rooted in Pacific leadership. Short-term projects, she cautioned, should not overshadow the need for lasting institutional strength.
Additionally, Ainnu highlighted the significance of the Ocean Literacy Initiative, which seeks to educate young individuals about the importance of ocean resources. This initiative is viewed as essential for promoting greater awareness and understanding of ocean ecosystems, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the tuna sector for future generations.
