UNITED Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reiterated the UN’s strong commitment to the Pacific region during a significant dialogue with regional leaders on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York. Guterres lauded the Pacific for its exemplary leadership amid challenging global circumstances, stating, “In these turbulent times, the Pacific is a voice of justice, peace, and solidarity.”
He expressed gratitude toward regional leaders for their pivotal roles and highlighted the Pacific’s dedication to climate action, peacebuilding, and the “Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace” Declaration, describing the area as “a beacon of hope.” Guterres asserted, “The United Nations is proud to stand with you. We know when the Pacific wins, we all win. We are in full solidarity with you.”
Pacific Forum Chair and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele noted that the dialogue was timely as the Pacific aims to implement its 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, aligning it with the UN’s ongoing reform efforts. “These are parallel journeys of renewal,” said Manele, emphasizing the opportunity to ensure that both paths are synchronized.
Leaders from the Pacific Forum brought forth three main priorities: addressing climate change and financing, enhancing peace and security, and reforming multilateralism to ensure it better addresses the region’s needs. They advocated for increased Pacific representation within the UN system, seeking more prominent roles in senior positions and decision-making bodies.
The discussions concluded with a collective commitment among leaders to convert dialogue into actionable outcomes, aiming for a peaceful, resilient, and sustainable future for the Blue Pacific Continent. This spirit of unity and proactive engagement underscores a hopeful outlook for the Pacific, which is navigating complex challenges while advocating for its strategic priorities on the global stage.
These dialogues reflect similar themes discussed in earlier forums, where regional leaders recognized the urgency of collaborative action on climate change and sustainable economic growth. The Pacific nations strive to solidify their identity and interests amidst increasing geopolitical pressures while promoting inclusive development and addressing existential threats like climate change and transnational crime.
In this ongoing journey, the commitment to regional resilience and solidarity shines through, with a shared vision aimed at fostering a sustainable future for all Pacific peoples. Through sustained partnerships and cooperative initiatives, Pacific nations are not only advocating for their rights but are also positioned to lead global discussions on crucial issues such as environmental protection and sustainable development.
