A regional initiative to bolster gender equity within law enforcement agencies across the Pacific commenced today at the Sheraton Resort in Denarau, Nadi. This week-long training program has attracted participants from numerous Pacific nations, highlighting a unified regional commitment to empowering women in policing roles. The event is backed by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and was officially opened by Fiji’s Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, who was joined by AFP’s Commander Pacific, Acting Assistant Commissioner Phillipa Connell.
Connell highlighted the AFP’s ongoing mission to refine its practices for enhanced gender inclusivity and urged for practical steps to eliminate obstacles that women officers encounter. Commissioner Tudravu reaffirmed the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police’s strong dedication to advancing women’s roles within their forces, reflecting a shared regional commitment to achieving gender balance.
This significant gathering includes participants from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Nauru, Tahiti, Northern Marianas, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Tokelau, Guam, New Zealand, and Fiji. The sessions are organized under the Pacific Community for Law Enforcement Cooperation (PCLEC), focusing on leadership development, improving workplace conditions for female officers, and promoting conversations that will shape the gender equality policies of the region’s police chiefs.
This initiative builds on previous regional endeavors aimed at enhancing security and law enforcement capabilities through cooperation and strategic training. Previous programs such as the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police meetings and specialized courses at Brisbane’s Pinkenba Training Hub have been part of broader efforts to reinforce policing frameworks in the Pacific. These initiatives have concentrated on countering transnational crime, enhancing interoperability, and realizing a cohesive approach to both regional and global security challenges.
