Pacific leaders and journalists have come together in a significant bid to tackle corruption, emphasizing the indispensable role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability within governments. This collaborative spirit was prominently showcased at the recent Conference of the State Parties (CoSP11) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Doha.

Ofani Eremae, co-founder and editor of In-depth Solomon’s news, as well as a board member of the Pacific Anti-Corruption Journalists Network, highlighted the crucial function journalists serve in this ongoing battle. He stated, “By exposing corruption and holding governments accountable, journalists can help to create a more just and equitable society.” Eremae pointed out that ensuring informed civil society and open governments are vital for investigative journalism, further stating that “integrity is essential for Pacific security.” He cautioned that if left unchecked, corruption can bolster criminal networks and undermine institutional integrity.

Marie Cauchois, head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Pacific Office, addressed the commitment of the convention to combat corruption, underscoring its significance for achieving regional objectives. Paul Brereton, Australia’s Anti-Corruption Commissioner, emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration among anti-corruption agencies throughout the Pacific.

Furthermore, the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) reported a notable rise in both the quantity and quality of anti-corruption journalism across the region, underscoring that journalists are essential for exposing wrongdoing and ensuring those in power are held accountable.

CoSP11 served as a vital platform for member states committed to the UNCAC, allowing nations to exchange best practices, confront emerging challenges, and strengthen collective efforts against corruption. This unified approach gives hope for a more transparent and equitable future for the Pacific region, where integrity and accountability can thrive.
