During the opening of the 55th Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA) in Nuku‘alofa, Tonga, Pasuna Tuaga, Tuvalu’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, highlighted the necessity of unity and innovation among Pacific nations. As the new chair of the CRGA, Tuaga emphasized the meeting’s importance in light of the current challenges faced by the Pacific Community (SPC) and the broader region.
“We gather at a critical time. Climate impacts, economic fragility, and shifting global dynamics remind us that business as usual is not an option. We must continue to be bold, collaborative, and innovative in shaping solutions that improve the lives of our people,” Tuaga stated, recognizing the urgent issues affecting the region.
He expressed gratitude to Tonga for its warm hospitality and acknowledged the leadership of outgoing Chair Tokelau. “It is a privilege for us to gather here in Nuku‘alofa and experience the generosity and hospitality that Tonga is known for,” he added.
Tuaga’s remarks underscored Tuvalu’s commitment to building a resilient and thriving Blue Pacific. He articulated that the region’s strength is rooted in its unity and paid homage to the Pacific Community’s 78-year legacy of supporting regional cooperation through scientific and technical assistance.
Urging delegates to embrace the principle of “unity through diversity,” Tuaga called on member nations to respect one another’s unique needs while collectively advocating for the Blue Pacific. He also commended SPC Director-General Dr. Stuart Minchin for his leadership as his term concludes, noting the challenges navigated during his tenure.
As the CRGA convenes, Tuaga encouraged participants to not only engage in policy discussions but also to strengthen relationships that bolster regional cooperation. “Distinguished delegates, we have important discussions ahead. However, outside this room, I encourage you to connect and strengthen the bonds that define us as a Pacific family,” he remarked.
In his formal opening of the meeting, Tuaga reiterated the SPC’s core values of unity, care, stewardship, and generosity, inviting each member nation to participate in a collective effort towards resilience and solidarity amid shared challenges.
This gathering embodies a commitment among Pacific leaders to confront various adversities, including economic difficulties, climate change, and geopolitical tensions. By fostering collaboration, the Pacific nations are laying the groundwork for a more equitable and prosperous future for communities throughout the region.
