As global attention shifts toward Brazil for COP30, Mosese Bulitavu, Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, has advocated for transformative action that prioritizes the needs of the world’s most vulnerable nations. Speaking at a pre-conference event, Bulitavu emphasized the necessity for the summit to move away from business as usual and to focus on securing meaningful outcomes for those already grappling with the harsh realities of climate change.
Bulitavu, who represented the Pacific nations in unison with other negotiators, voiced that “This work is about our survival,” highlighting the urgent need for international commitments that address the struggles faced by coastal communities in Fiji and beyond. The ocean’s plight due to rising sea levels and extreme weather patterns has forced many families and villages to relocate, putting their identities and cultural heritage at risk.
In his remarks, he lauded Brazil’s commitment to ocean protection and underscored the importance of integrating oceanic issues into climate discussions. “This COP is critical as we prepare for the next, where Fiji will co-chair the Ocean dialogue,” he stated, illustrating a proactive approach to ensure that ocean-related concerns are included as a permanent agenda item.
Fiji and other Pacific nations are also supporting Australia’s bid to host COP31, hoped to be the inaugural “Pacific COP.” They aim for the global community to witness firsthand the vulnerabilities present within the region and understand the significance of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
