Apple is introducing new age verification tools for developers as the company implements stricter App Store regulations for apps rated 18 and older in various markets, including Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and specific regions in the United States. These updates are part of Apple’s commitment to comply with regional laws regarding age assurance.
Beginning today, users in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore will no longer be able to download apps classified as 18+ unless their age as adults is verified through appropriate methods. Apple emphasizes that while the App Store will automatically perform this verification, developers will also have a role in confirming their users’ age utilizing the updated Declared Age Range API, which provides valuable insights regarding a user’s age.
In Brazil, developers using the Declared Age Range API will have the capability to access a user’s age group, provided that the user or their parent or guardian consents to share this information. Additionally, any app that indicates it contains loot boxes in its age rating questionnaire will automatically be classified as 18+.
For users in Utah, the age verification requirement will be applicable to new Apple accounts starting May 6, while Louisiana will follow suit on July 1. Apple is also enhancing several tools to support developers in fulfilling compliance obligations. The Declared Age Range API will enable developers to determine when they must adhere to age-related regulations and when they need to seek parental consent for updates or significant changes to their apps.
