Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced humanitarian efforts and adherence to international humanitarian standards during his keynote address at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly. In line with the theme, “Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis,” Jitoko advocated for collaborative and inclusive strategies to effectively respond to global emergencies.
During his speech, Jitoko acknowledged the recent peace established in Gaza and Palestine, expressing optimism that this ceasefire could pave the way for widespread reconciliation efforts worldwide. He emphasized the unique vulnerabilities experienced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as Fiji, where climate change is an immediate threat rather than a future concern. Fiji is currently facing the harsh realities of intensified cyclones, rising sea levels, and community displacement—issues that heavily burden national resources and challenge resilience.
Jitoko also showcased Fiji’s proactive stance in promoting humanitarian and climate action, citing significant legislative achievements such as the Climate Change Act of 2021 and the Environmental Levy Act of 2017. He further noted initiatives like the designation of the Pacific Ocean as an ‘Ocean of Peace,’ a commitment reaffirmed by Pacific leaders, showcasing Fiji’s pledge to maintain a stable and nurturing climate.
In addition, he reinforced Fiji’s commitment to transparency, democracy, and climate justice, insisting that emergency powers should always uphold human rights. Jitoko encouraged the Assembly to inspire ambitious, coordinated action, imploring that productive dialogue must translate into concrete progress.
His remarks draw on prior discussions at the Sixth World Conference of Speakers, where leaders acknowledged the severity of climate emergencies and humanitarian crises. Jitoko’s address serves as a powerful reminder of the necessity for collective action and solidarity in tackling these urgent global challenges. By fostering such cooperation, there is a promising opportunity to build a more resilient future, particularly for vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by these crises.
