Fiji has reinforced its dedication to regional unity and shared objectives at the United Nations, as expressed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during a meeting with the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) in New York. Rabuka emphasized the traditional Pacific approach of unity and cooperation, recognizing the region’s historical role in shaping global agendas.
The Prime Minister praised the adoption of new General Guidelines by the PSIDS, designed to enhance collaborative efforts at the UN. Highlighting the region’s ongoing influence, Rabuka said, “The PSIDS has historically proven to have leverage in shaping the Agenda of the UN, so we as Leaders including Permanent Representatives here in New York, must remain vigilant in working closely together as a family guided by the Pacific Way.”
He expressed appreciation for the collective efforts of the group, stating that these guidelines will bolster the PSIDS’s capabilities in addressing common priorities at the UN. Rabuka also acknowledged the potential for PSIDS to expand its understanding of global challenges while staying true to Pacific values.
As an informal coalition within the UN, PSIDS unites Pacific Island nations to amplify their collective voice. This reaffirms Fiji’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism, as echoed in previous dialogues and initiatives led by Rabuka, such as the “Ocean of Peace” Declaration and regional gatherings focused on security and development.
Through consistent engagement at international platforms, Fiji continues to advocate for peace, environmental sustainability, and regional cohesion. As the Pacific region navigates contemporary challenges, such as climate change and geopolitical tensions, the collaborative and unified approach championed by Rabuka highlights a hopeful future. This renewed commitment to solidarity and shared values sets a constructive foundation for tackling global challenges, while preserving the unique cultural and environmental heritage of the Pacific.
