Pacific Islands Forum Troika Leaders convened their first in-person meeting of 2026 in Brisbane, Australia, reaffirming their dedication to unity, regional solidarity, and collective leadership amid increasing global challenges.

The meeting featured the participation of Jeremiah Manele, the Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands; Surangel Whipps, the incoming Forum Chair and President of Palau; and Lord Fakafanua, the Prime Minister of Tonga, attending his inaugural Troika meeting following his recent appointment.

During this gathering, the Troika Leaders engaged in constructive dialogue, focusing on follow-up actions from the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting. Topics of discussion included advancements related to the Review of the Regional Architecture, the strategic outlook for 2026, and various regional and international engagements on the horizon. The dialogue highlighted the Forum’s ongoing significance as a principal political platform for Pacific Leaders, fostering shared priorities while accommodating diverse perspectives to enhance regional cohesion.

Prime Minister Manele welcomed Prime Minister Fakafanua’s participation, emphasizing that his attendance underscores the principles of continuity, inclusivity, and collective leadership within the Forum family. Secretary General Baron Waqa remarked on the importance of the meeting, affirming that the Troika continues its crucial stewardship role in promoting unity and confidence within Forum processes.

“As attention to regional and global matters intensifies, the Pacific Islands Forum serves as a trusted space for Pacific leaders to engage openly, reconcile differences, and pursue shared goals in the spirit of ‘Iumi Tugeda’,” Waqa stated.

Additionally, Troika Leaders were joined by Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen MP, to discuss preparations for COP31 and the arrangements for hosting the Pre-COP 31 Meeting along with associated Pacific-focused engagements.

The outcomes and recommendations from the Troika discussions will be communicated by the Forum Chair to all Forum Leaders for their consideration, aligning with established Forum processes. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the bonds within the Pacific Islands community but also sets a hopeful trajectory for addressing pressing regional and global challenges moving forward.
