Pacific Leaders at UNGA80: Climate Action, Security and Development in Focus

Pacific Islands at UNGA80 Push for Climate, Ocean, and Security Progress

Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders are gearing up to emphasize critical regional priorities during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). They are focused on climate action, ocean governance, regional security, and people-centered development, aligning with the UNGA theme, “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development, and human rights,” which underscores the importance of multilateral cooperation.

Led by Forum Chair and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele and PIF Secretary General Baron Divavesi Waqa, the Pacific leaders will seek to amplify their voices in discussions with high-level officials, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres. This push follows momentum from the outcomes of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting conducted earlier this month.

The PIF remains steadfast in advocating for increased climate commitments, calling on global leaders to utilize the International Court of Justice advisory opinion to inform policy decisions. The forum also supports Australia’s candidacy to host COP31, aiming to spotlight the Pacific’s unique climate vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the recent signing of the Agreement to Establish the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) will be a focal point, highlighting regional climate finance initiatives.

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty, Pacific leaders underscore their dedication to global nuclear disarmament. Discussions will also include the Pacific Roadmap for Economic Development, which focuses on bolstering economic resilience and promoting inclusive growth.

Ocean conservation will be a critical topic as leaders address issues like climate change, overfishing, and plastic pollution. They advocate for a robust global agreement to tackle plastic waste.

The assembly also marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, reminding Pacific nations of their tradition of advancing gender equality. Leaders will reaffirm their dedication to gender parity and social inclusion in regional development.

Amidst a shifting geopolitical environment, UNGA80 provides a vital platform for Pacific Islands to impact global climate policy, reinforce regional security, and secure sustainable development. By actively participating on the global stage, Pacific leaders aim to ensure a resilient and peaceful future for the Blue Pacific Continent.
