Pacific Marks 30 Years of Beijing Action on Gender Equality—Calls for More Women in Leadership

Pacific Gender Equality Progress: Calls for More Women in Leadership

Solomon Islands Prime Minister and Forum Chair Jeremiah Manele recently addressed the United Nations, spotlighting the progress made over the past three decades toward gender equality in the Pacific, while acknowledging that greater strides are necessary, particularly in political leadership and decision-making roles for women. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, Manele highlighted advancements led by Pacific women and girls in fields such as education, health, and the economy.

Significant improvements have been made in reproductive health initiatives, with programs such as HPV vaccinations and cervical cancer screenings gathering momentum. Gender equality is being increasingly integrated into national reports and budgets across the Pacific region. Despite these advancements, Manele noted a critical need for enhanced female representation in political and decision-making circles. To confront these challenges, Forum members are developing a Regional Gender Equality Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning Plan aimed at closing data gaps and guiding future actions.

Manele also underscored emerging challenges like technology-facilitated abuse, urging for innovative partnerships to counter these threats. He reaffirmed the Pacific’s commitment to ensuring the safety, peace, and dignity of women and girls, in alignment with UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration.

On a national level, the Solomon Islands have initiated projects to bolster education and health services for women and girls, such as second-chance university programs, distribution of reusable menstrual pads, the removal of taxes on sanitary products, and expanded professional support during childbirth. Moreover, the government is prioritizing legislation and policies to combat gender-based violence and is enhancing women’s economic empowerment in rural areas through financial literacy programs and savings clubs.

This revitalized emphasis on gender equality and empowerment throughout the Pacific signifies positive progress. Through a collective commitment to multilateralism and adherence to the Beijing Platform for Action, the region is steadfast in its pursuit of gender equality, shaping a more inclusive and equitable future for all Pacific nations. These ongoing efforts reinforce the region’s dedication to fostering a society where both women and men can thrive equally.
