The Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) has issued a compelling call to action to mark World Human Rights Day, emphasizing the universal nature of human rights, which includes the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals. Interim CEO Loata Tucika stressed the importance of safeguarding these rights to foster a safer and more inclusive environment across the Pacific region.
Tucika highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQI+ people, including violence, harassment, and systemic discrimination. She urged governments and communities to prioritize the dignity and safety of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.
In reinforcing the need for collaboration, Tucika pointed out PSGDN’s partnerships with organizations such as ILGA Oceania and DIVA for Equality, supported by the DFAT-funded Equality Collaboration. These alliances aim to progress the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals throughout the Pacific.
While recognizing the significance of cultural and religious values, Tucika underscored that it is crucial for LGBTQI+ individuals to live free from violence and discrimination. She urged states to take responsibility for the protection of all people from harm, including acts of violence and harassment, and to ensure accountability when violations occur.
Moreover, Tucika called for the implementation of stronger measures to combat discrimination and address hate-motivated violence. She emphasized the necessity of reviewing existing laws and policies to prevent the unjust criminalization of individuals based on their identity or gender expression. Furthermore, she urged states to adhere to international human rights standards while developing culturally sensitive approaches to protection and inclusivity.
Through these efforts, there is hope for a more equitable and respectful society where all individuals can enjoy their rights without fear of persecution.
