O’Ward Dismisses F1 Rumors: What’s Next for the IndyCar Star?

As speculation surrounds who Cadillac will select for Formula 1’s newest team in 2026, Pato O’Ward has seemingly distanced himself from the conversation. Despite being linked as a potential candidate, the IndyCar driver highlighted his commitment to his current team, Arrow McLaren, reinforcing his dedication to the American motorsport scene.

O’Ward playfully compared the rumors about his move to Cadillac to false tabloid gossip, saying, “That was just pure smoke and mirrors,” akin to the absurd concept of Fernando Alonso dating Taylor Swift. His comments reflect the sometimes dubious nature of media speculation in motorsports.

While other IndyCar drivers like Colton Herta and championship leader Alex Palou have been mentioned as prospects for Cadillac, former Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner expresses skepticism about the inclusion of an American driver in F1. Steiner argues that the risks associated with placing inexperienced drivers in the high-stakes environment of Formula 1 are significant, stating, “Those guys have no experience in Formula One, and then it can quickly backfire.”

In contrast to these cautionary views, rumors suggest that Cadillac may also consider experienced drivers such as Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez. Together, these veterans boast a combined total of 546 races, which could alleviate some concerns regarding adaptability to F1.

O’Ward has consistently proclaimed his love for IndyCar and his enduring ties to America. He has stated that even if he finds himself in F1, he always envisions returning to the U.S., emphasizing that, “I don’t see myself leaving to Europe and settling there for the rest of my life.” McLaren CEO Zak Brown has also expressed support for O’Ward, highlighting his impressive performances and the opportunities he has been given within the F1 scene, including test drives.

As the 2023 IndyCar season progresses, O’Ward is currently performing exceptionally well, sitting second behind rival Alex Palou and demonstrating impeccable consistency by finishing every race so far. His recent victory at the Synk 275 showcases his talent and potential, keeping him firmly in the conversation as a top IndyCar competitor.

Despite the swirling rumors and uncertainty about his future, O’Ward remains focused on his current role in IndyCar, embodying a spirit of dedication and passion for American motorsport. This commitment could give him a solid foundation should opportunities arise in F1 or further endeavors, hinting at a bright future where he can balance both worlds.
