In 2010, while on active duty in the Navy, I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). At the time, I was excelling in my career, primed for promotion, and preparing to request a position as a Commissioned Naval Officer. However, my life took a drastic turn when I became severely ill.
A seemingly normal day at the beach with friends led to an emergency room visit, a week-long hospital stay, and multiple extended hospitalizations. At just 23 years old, and barely two years into my career, I was diagnosed with lupus. Over the next three years, this illness stripped away my career, travel aspirations, and strained relationships, friendships, and my dream of motherhood.
But that was not the end of my story. Today, I am a thriving wife, mother, business owner, and surrounded by supportive, enriching relationships. Despite lupus trying to derail my life, I am resolute and determined to fight back every day.
Lupus may have attempted to steal, kill, and destroy, but this warrior is not backing down. Each morning brings new determination to overcome the challenges it presents.
