A member of the prestigious Rockefeller family, Ostillman Rockefeller, faced a harrowing experience when he was attacked by a shark while swimming near Laucala Island in Fiji. Reports from 1990 recount how Rockefeller, then 30, was vacationing with the late billionaire Malcolm Forbes when the incident occurred.
According to sources, Rockefeller had just checked into his bungalow and immediately ventured into the ocean for a swim in waist-deep waters. While alone, he encountered a shark that bit him twice on the right leg. In a remarkable display of determination, he managed to swim back to shore and crawled about 300 meters to his bungalow, where he promptly alerting the staff by phone.
Island workers quickly rushed to his aid, and a nurse from the Qamea Health Centre was called to provide assistance. Dr. Viliame Taoi from Waiyevo Hospital later treated Rockefeller, who was in stable condition but had lost a significant amount of blood. The doctor reported that Rockefeller had lacerated his right Achilles tendon, requiring stitches.
Meanwhile, the news of the attack generated widespread concern, particularly from overseas. Lautoka Hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Serupepeli Goneyali, noted that many calls were coming in from the United States and that arrangements were being made for a team of specialists to fly to Fiji to assist with his recovery. Eventually, Rockefeller was transported to Lautoka Hospital and later flown back to New York on a private plane.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Rockefeller recounted the chilling moment when he felt his leg being pulled underwater, only to discover the extensive damage. Despite the traumatic incident, he remained optimistic about returning to Fiji, expressing that he had not been discouraged by the experience.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by shark attacks in popular swimming areas, a concern that has been echoed in recent years by similar incidents reported by fishermen in Fiji. Just recently, a fisherman tragically lost his life in a shark attack, underscoring the unpredictability of encounters with marine life in coastal waters. The community continues to be vigilant about safety while enjoying the ocean, hoping to maintain a balance between engaging with nature and ensuring human safety.
Rockefeller’s resilience in the face of such a traumatic event serves as a reminder of the strength individuals can find even in the most frightening situations. His story reinforces the importance of quick medical response and community support in restoring safety and health after such incidents.
